The apocalypse that never shipped.
For most of computing history a year took two digits. That wasn't laziness. Memory was expensive, storage was worse, and 19 was a very safe assumption for a very long time.
Then the assumption ran out. Code written in the sixties and seventies was still in production in 1999, still storing 99, and no one could say with confidence what it would do when the field rolled over to 00. Not "civilization ends" uncertain. "We do not actually know what payroll does on Monday" uncertain — across banking, utilities, air traffic, and every accounting system anyone had ever bolted onto another one.
So it got fixed. Retired COBOL programmers were hired back at consulting rates to read code older than the engineers maintaining it. The US spent an estimated $100 billion between 1995 and 2001 — about $365 for every person in the country — widening a date field.
On 1 January 2000, almost nothing happened.
That is either the most boring outcome in the history of engineering or its single greatest success, and people have been arguing about which one ever since. You cannot run the experiment twice.
The details
Some of it did break, quietly, in the best possible places. The US Naval Observatory — the office that keeps the country's official time — ran a millennium countdown page that displayed the year as 19100 for about 45 minutes. Old JavaScript on an outside host had taken 1900, added a value of 100, and printed the result.
That is the number on this shirt. Not the collapse that was advertised. The actual bug, on the actual clock, for 45 minutes.
Y2K was never a virus. It was a storage decision that came due.

Printing, size and care
Printing, size and care
Every exhibit is printed to order, direct to garment, by Monster Digital in Miami, Florida. The ink goes into the cotton rather than sitting on top of it, so there is no plastic feel and nothing to crack or peel. It fades the way a good print should: slowly, evenly, over years of washing.
The tee is a Gildan 64000 Softstyle. 100% ring-spun cotton on the solid colours; heathers and Sport Grey are cotton-poly blends. 4.5 oz, tape-reinforced shoulders, no side seams. Unisex, S to 3XL. The artwork is printed on the front, centred on the chest, about 8.5 inches wide by 12 inches tall.
The hoodie is a Gildan 18500 Heavy Blend. 50/50 cotton-poly, 8 oz, double-lined hood, front pouch pocket. Unisex, S to 5XL. The artwork is printed large on the back, about 9 inches wide by 12.5 inches tall, set below the hood so nothing hides under it. The UNHACKED emblem sits on the left chest at about 3.75 inches.
Care. Machine wash cold, inside out. Tumble dry low or hang. No bleach. Do not iron over the print. That is the whole list.
