It gets filed under Gmail and dissidents. The people running it were after source code.
From roughly the middle of 2009 through December, a set of intrusions worked through Google, Adobe, Juniper Networks, Rackspace and a longer list of technology and defence companies that later counts put above thirty. The way in was a use-after-free bug in Internet Explorer, versions 6 through 8, eventually numbered CVE-2010-0249 and patched out of band as MS10-002.
Google made it public on 12 January 2010, in the same post that announced it would stop censoring its search results in China. The dissident Gmail accounts were real, and the access to them was thin — account metadata, subject lines, creation dates, rather than the contents.
What McAfee found when it looked across the wider set of victims was that the attackers had gone for software configuration management systems. Dmitri Alperovitch's description of them has aged well: they were wide open. Nobody had thought about securing them, and they held the crown jewels — worth a great deal more than the financial and personal data those same companies spent their budgets protecting.
The name is an accident. Aurora was a folder on the attacker's own machine, left inside the file path compiled into two of the binaries. An operation known to history by the directory its author happened to be working in.
Working exploit code was public within days of the disclosure. The German, French and Australian governments each told their citizens to use a different browser, which was not a thing that had happened before.
The term advanced persistent threat existed before all this. Afterwards, everybody was selling one.
Every company on that list shipped a product. Not one of them lost a product. What went out the door was the drawings.

Printing, size and care
Printing, size and care
Every exhibit is printed to order, direct to garment, by Monster Digital in Miami, Florida. The ink goes into the cotton rather than sitting on top of it, so there is no plastic feel and nothing to crack or peel. It fades the way a good print should: slowly, evenly, over years of washing.
The tee is a Gildan 64000 Softstyle. 100% ring-spun cotton on the solid colours; heathers and Sport Grey are cotton-poly blends. 4.5 oz, tape-reinforced shoulders, no side seams. Unisex, S to 3XL. The artwork is printed on the front, centred on the chest, about 8.5 inches wide by 12 inches tall.
The hoodie is a Gildan 18500 Heavy Blend. 50/50 cotton-poly, 8 oz, double-lined hood, front pouch pocket. Unisex, S to 5XL. The artwork is printed large on the back, about 9 inches wide by 12.5 inches tall, set below the hood so nothing hides under it. The UNHACKED emblem sits on the left chest at about 3.75 inches.
Care. Machine wash cold, inside out. Tumble dry low or hang. No bleach. Do not iron over the print. That is the whole list.
