They asked for nearly a billion dollars. A spelling mistake stopped most of it.
Over the weekend of 4 to 5 February 2016, someone sent 35 payment instructions over the SWIFT network from Bangladesh Bank's account at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, asking to move close to $951 million. The timing was chosen with care: it was a Thursday night in Dhaka heading into the Bangladeshi weekend, and it ran into a public holiday in the Philippines, where the money was going.
The attackers had been inside the bank's network for weeks, and they had planted malware that did one quietly devastating thing: it suppressed the printed confirmations. Bangladesh Bank confirmed SWIFT transactions on a physical printer, and the malware made the printer go blind, so the fraudulent orders left no paper trail on the floor where staff would have seen them. By the time anyone noticed, it was Friday and the office was shut.
Five orders cleared before the rest were stopped, moving about $101 million. Eighty-one million went to four accounts at a branch of Rizal Commercial Banking Corporation on Jupiter Street in Manila, and from there into casinos, where it became very hard to trace. Twenty million more was routed to Sri Lanka.
The Sri Lanka transfer was stopped for the least sophisticated reason imaginable. The attackers had misspelled the name of the payee, a body called the Shalika Foundation, writing it as Fandation. A bank in the chain queried the spelling, and the transfer was held.
The larger transfers drew scrutiny for a reason almost as strange: the RCBC branch sat on Jupiter Street, and the word Jupiter matched the name of a sanctioned Iranian oil tanker on a screening list, which tripped a manual review at the Fed.
The FBI and others attributed the operation to the Lazarus Group, the same North Korean outfit later tied to Sony Pictures and WannaCry. Most of the $81 million has never come back.
A billion-dollar theft, engineered to the minute, undone by a typo and a street named after a planet.

Printing, size and care
Printing, size and care
Every exhibit is printed to order, direct to garment, by Monster Digital in Miami, Florida. The ink goes into the cotton rather than sitting on top of it, so there is no plastic feel and nothing to crack or peel. It fades the way a good print should: slowly, evenly, over years of washing.
The tee is a Gildan 64000 Softstyle. 100% ring-spun cotton on the solid colours; heathers and Sport Grey are cotton-poly blends. 4.5 oz, tape-reinforced shoulders, no side seams. Unisex, S to 3XL. The artwork is printed on the front, centred on the chest, about 8.5 inches wide by 12 inches tall.
The hoodie is a Gildan 18500 Heavy Blend. 50/50 cotton-poly, 8 oz, double-lined hood, front pouch pocket. Unisex, S to 5XL. The artwork is printed large on the back, about 9 inches wide by 12.5 inches tall, set below the hood so nothing hides under it. The UNHACKED emblem sits on the left chest at about 3.75 inches.
Care. Machine wash cold, inside out. Tumble dry low or hang. No bleach. Do not iron over the print. That is the whole list.
