In 2005 Sony BMG pressed a copy-protection system called XCP onto about two million discs across fifty-two titles. Put one in a Windows machine, accept the licence, and it installed a driver that hid every file, process and registry key whose name began with $sys$ — from you, and from every administrative tool you owned. Mark Russinovich found it on 31 October 2005 while testing a new build of RootkitRevealer on his own machine, and traced it to a Van Zant album he had bought. Four days later, on NPR, a Sony BMG executive said the line that follows the company around forever: most people, I think, don't even know what a rootkit is, so why should they care about it? The cloak hid anything named $sys$, so the first malware to rename itself $sys$ got hidden for free. The copy protection did not stop copying.
